With the success of the 1994 World Cup in the USA, former Rochester Lancers owner Charlie Schiano began the first ever soccer talk show in North America, “Soccer is a Kick in the Grass”, the name of the show inspired by the theme song of the Tampa Bay Rowdies from the NASL. Charlie was joined in that 1st season by the former play-by-play voice of the Lancers, Wayne Fuller, and future Rochester Rhinos’ play-by-play man Joe Giuliano.
Starting in 1995 and continuing for the next 12 years, Charlie shared the mic with former Lancers’ trainer Joe Sirianni. With Charlie’s retirement from radio at the end of 2006, Joe took over as the show’s host and brought in Rhinos' broadcaster Andrew Battisti, as the new co-host. In 2008, former Lancers’ goalkeeper “Mr. Zero” Dick Howard, a fixture on Fox Soccer Channel and Canadian soccer TV broadcasts, joined the show as the international correspondent.
Soccer is a Kick in the Grass has promoted soccer in the Rochester area by covering the Rhinos extensively and interviewing many of the players and coaches on the team. In addition, a portion of every show is devoted to Major League Soccer, the US National teams and the world’s game.
