We are sad to say that the father of Rochester soccer journalism and one of the first dedicated soccer writers in the US, “the Dean of Soccer” Alex Loj passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014 after a long illness. Alex covered soccer for nearly 50 years in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper starting at age 16 and was the first reporter for the Rochester Lancers and to travel to cover the World Cup in 1970.  Also was on radio for over 20 years on “Kick This – The Soccer Sam Show” and “The Bob Matthews Show” and TV on "Talking Soccer".  Alex was was the director of public relations for the outdoor Rochester Lancers and the American Soccer League and was inducted into the Rochester Lancers Wall of Fame in 2013.

Alex came to the US in 1958 from Brazil and played soccer at Edison Tech High School (a 3-time All Scholastic selection) and for club sides Ukrainian-Americans, Kiev SC and Dnipro.  Alex was very active in the Rochester area Ukrainian community and Special Olympics.
