    We reviewed the year in US, Canadian and international soccer with regular correspondents Michael Lewis and Dick Howard, plus had the owner of the MASL Rochester Lancers, "Soccer Sam" Fantauzzo, on as our special guest o talk about the indoor Lancers 2020 season. Sam also broke the news that the Lancers have proposed to play their first 12 matches in the 2021 MASL season on the road to have a better chance for fans to attend home matches in the spring.

    We paid tribute to the late Rochester Lancers forward Tommy Ord, who passed away on December 11 with our special guest, Tommy's teammate and lifelong friend George Gibbs, who spoke about Tommy's playing career, what he was like as a person and he saved George's career by bringing him to the Lancers in 1974. Michael Lewis, Joe Sirianni and Dick Howard also shared their memories of Tommy as well.

     

    Michael spoke on the US Soccer players of the year, Weston McKinnie and Sam Mewis and LAFC facing Tigres of Mexico in the CONCACAF Champions League final on Tuesday.

     

    Dick talked about Alphonso Davies being the 1st North American male player to be placed on the FIFA 1st 11, the changes at the top of the EPL, Lionel Messi equaling Pele's record for most goals with one club and the Boxing Day matches in the Premiership.

    We paid tribute to soccer legends Paolo Rossi and Gerard Houllier on the show. Our special guest was Rossi's teammate briefly on the Buffalo Stallions, Lancers and Rhinos Wall of Famer Pat Ercoli, who talked about what Rossi meant to the Italians in North America and what he was like as a man off the pitch.

     

    Dick Howard remembers his friend Gerard Houllier, previewed the UEFA Champions League Knockout Stage draw, talked about Montreal vs Olimpia in the CONCACAF Champions League and discussed the latest matches in Europe.

     

    Michael Lewis remembered Paolo Rossi, recapped the MLS Cup final won by host Columbus and talked about the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League taking place this week in Orlando.

    Our special guests tonight were the 2 men who represented the Rochester Lancers in the first ever MASL all-star match on December 5, veteran midfields Jeremy Ortiz and player/coach Doug Miller. Both talked about playing for the first time since March, coming together with the best in the league for the match and what is was like to be named to the first ever MASL all-star match.

     

    Michael Lewis previewed the MLS Cup Final this Saturday between host Columbus and the West Champion and why he will not attend the Cup for the first time in 25 years, the USMNT facing El Salvador on Wednesday and the NWSL Utah Royals folding.

     

    Dick Howard reviewed Forge FC of Hamilton's matches in the CONCACAF League, Alejandro Pozuelo of Toronto FC being named MLS MVP, Canada's road to the World Cup in 2022, the big matches in the EPL and Serie A and the last round of group stage contests in the UEFA Champions League.

    We paid tribute to the late Diego Maradona with Andrew, Joe, Dick Howard, Michael Lewis and the former assistant coach of the 1986 World Champion Argentina National team, Rochester Lancers Wall of Famer Francisco Escos sharing their memories of Diego and what he meant to Argentina, Napoli and soccer.

     

    Dick and Michael also discussed the MLS playoffs, Forge FC of Hamilton in the CONCACAF League quarterfinals and the latest results from the European Leagues.

    The show focused on the MLS playoffs and the incredible matches in the first round. Michael Lewis gave his thoughts on the results and also joined Andrew and Joe in reminiscing about the 1977 NASL QF 1st leg match between the Rochester Lancers and Toronto Metros-Croatia that ended with a controversial and memorable shootout.

     

    Dick Howard talked about Toronto FC facing Nashville in the MLS playoffs, the problems with Barcelona, Milan still leading Serie A, Liverpool setting a new record of 64 matches without a loss at home, matched in England now allowing fans and the week's contests in the UEFA Champions League.

     

    Joe and Andrew also discussed Rochester Lancers player/coach Doug Miller being named to the MASL All-Star game roster and GK coach Marcelo Moreira becoming a US citizen last weekend.

    Our special guest was the primary owner of the new pro outdoor soccer team in Rochester that will play in NISA in 2022, Dave Weaver, who spoke on how the team came together, the news that they will play in the downtown soccer stadium and what the process is to have the application accepted by the league.

     

    Dick Howard remembered former Canadian World Cup Men's National Team coach Tony Waiters and former Liverpool and England keeper Ray Clemence, who both passed away recently, and discussed the upcoming Euro 2021 tournament and the 6 groups who will compete.

     

    Michael Lewis reviewed the US Men's National Team beating Panama 6-2 and the young stars who made their mark in the match and also previewed the 1st round of the MLS playoffs starting this week.

    We remembered former NASL Rochester Lancers defender Damir Sutevski on the show, a 4 time champion with Toronto Metros-Croatia and the indoor NY Arrows, who passed away last week at age 66. Andrew, Joe, Dick, Michael and our special guest, Lancers Wall of Fame coach Don Popovic, remembered Damir the player and the man who was a class act and a consummate professional.

     

    Dick Howard talked about Canadian Premier champions Forge FC beating host Tauro FC of Panama 2-1 in the CONCACAF League, Toronto FC finishing as the #2 seed in the MLS playoffs, the crazy results and standings in the European leagues and the international matches taking place this week.

     

    Michael Lewis discussed the very young (average 22 years old) US Men's National Team facing Wales in a friendly on Thursday and the MLS playoffs with surprising Nashville and Inter Miami making the postseason in their first year in the league.

    Our special guest tonight was the Commissioner of the Canadian Premier League, David Clanachan, who spoke on the champions Forge FC facing Tauro FC of Panama in the CONCACAF League on Tuesday, the success of the 2020 Island Games season, the future of the CPL and if a pro women's league will start in Canada.

     

    The show also celebrated the 60th birthday of Diego Maradona and broke news the Argentinian legend was hospitalized today. Joe and Andrew talked about Maradona's career and the eternal debate of who is the best of all time, Pele or Diego. Dick Howard and Michael Lewis recalled their encounters with Maradona at the 1986 World Cup.

     

    Dick also discussed the passing of England World Champion "Nobby" Stiles, the upheaval in the front office of Barcelona, the latest matches in Europe, the upcoming UEFA Champions League matches and Toronto FC playing for the MLS Supporters Shield this weekend. Michael Lewis discussed the CONCACAF Champions League being played in a bubble in the US in December and the final week of matches in the MLS regular season.

    Our special guest tonight was the newest member of the Rochester Lancers, goalkeeper Matt Perrella, who talked about his background in soccer, trying out for a number of teams overseas, the transition from outdoors to indoors and how he came to play for the Lancers.

     

    The show also celebrated the 80th birthday of the immortal Pele with memories of his playing for Brazil, Santos and the Cosmos against the NASL Lancers in the 1970's. Michael Lewis, Joe Sirianni and Dick Howard all shared stories, including Dick talking about how he once faced Pele on a penalty kick!

     

    Dick also discussed the latest matches in Europe, the upcoming UEFA Champions League matches and Canadian soccer news from Toronto FC and Forge FC of Hamilton. Michael Lewis discussed legendary play-by-play man Andres Cantor being named to the US Soccer Hall of Fame, the USMNT facing Wales on November 12 and the latest from MLS, including the Hudson River Derby coming up this Sunday.

    We covered the breaking news that the longest running pro soccer franchise in the US, the Milwaukee Wave, will not play this season in the MASL. Special guests Greg Suttie from "Suttie on Soccer" and Rochester Lancers coach Doug Miller gave their reactions to the news and what this might mean for the upcoming 2021 MASL season.

     

    Dick Howard and Andrew Battisti talked about the European league results and the upstart teams doing well so far while established teams are struggling, plus Dick gave his thoughts on the UEFA Champions League group stage and MLS not awarding the Supporters Shield this season and the impact to leaders Toronto FC.

     

    Michael Lewis of Front Row Soccer also gave his opinion on the MLS Supporters Shield being put on hold this season, the potential playoff impact of the Colorado Rapids' last 7 matches being cancelled and the latest matches for the NY Red Bulls and NYCFC.

    Michael Lewis discussed the firing of DC United Coach Ben Olsen and reports that former USWNT coach Jill Ellis may be a candidate for the job, the latest results from NYCFC and the NY Red Bulls, former Rochester Rhino John McCarthy winning 2 straight matches in goal for Inter Miami and the Portland Thorns winning the NWSL Community Shield.

Boomer talked about the injury that kept him sidelined last year, why he is coming back to the Lancers, his coaching career, and what we can expect for the new MASL season.

     

    Dick Howard reviewed the last day of the transfer window, the incredible results from this past week in the Premiership, Juventus gaining a forfeit win over Napoli when Napoli refused to travel to Torino due to COVID and the group matchups in the UEFA Champions League.

     

    Michael Lewis talked about the success of the young US Men's National Team players across Europe this past week, Inter Miami GK Luis Robles suffering a broken arm vs NYCFC and former Rhino John McCarthy likely becoming the starter in goal for Miami and NYCFC returning to play at home at Yankee Stadium starting Wednesday.

    Dick Howard reviewed the Liverpool 3-1 win over Arsenal on Monday, along with the wild Premiership matches this weekend, the unlikely top 2 in the Bundesliga, Luis Suarez starting off well with Atletico Madrid, CR7 saving Juventus against Roma and Toronto FC posting 2 big wins this past week.

     

    Michael Lewis talked about a potential new coach being hired for the NY Red Bulls and the team posting a pair of 4-1 wins this past week, NYCFC losing key players to injury and Miami FC struggling in their initial season, plus CONCACAF delaying the semi-finals and finals of the Nations League to June.

    Andrew Battisti and Joe Sirianni discussed the new "Safe Suites" that the Rochester Lancers will be deploying for MASL matches this season to help fans stay safe from COVID-19 and also the success that the Pittsburgh Riverhounds are having in the USL Championship with former Rochester Rhinos coach Bob Lilley and a number of former Rhinos players.

     

    Dick Howard reviewed the Canadian Premier League Championship won by Forge FC, the results of Canadian MLS team matches, Zlatan Ibrahimović scoring twice to give Milan an opening day victory in Serie A, Juventus winning 3-0 helped by US International Weston McKinnie, the return of Gareth bale to Spurs, the results of the Premiership matches this weekend and the big matches this weekend between undefeated teams.

     

    Michael Lewis talked about 17 year old US star Gio Renya scoring his first goal in the Bundesliga, the upcoming draw for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the move of US Women's internationals Alex Morgan, Christen Press and Tobin Heath to play in the English Women's Super League and the tough weekend for the NY MLS clubs.

    50th Anniversary of the 1970 NASL Champion Rochester Lancers

    This was a special 90 minute show celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Rochester Lancers winning the 1970 NASL Championship. Joining show host and Lancers' trainer, Joe Sirianni, and international correspondent and Lancers keeper, Dick Howard, was Lancers Chairman of the Board, Charlie Schiano, team captain, Charlie Mitchell and NASL MVP and leading scorer Carlos Metidieri.

     

    Michael Lewis, author of the upcoming book, Alive and Kicking: The Incredible but True Story of the Rochester Lancers, contributed some stories of the 1970 team and current Lancers indoor coach Doug Miller talked about the 21 players signed for the 2021 MASL season.

    Our Labor Day show featured Rochester Lancers Historian Andrew Battisti speaking with the man without whom there would be no professional soccer in the United States today, the Chairman of the Board of the original Rochester Lancers, Charlie Schiano, a gentleman who should be a part of the US Soccer Hall of Fame.

     

    With the Lancers celebrating the 50th anniversary of their NASL title this month, We replayed Charlie discussing the true story of how the Lancers saved US professional soccer in 1970 by moving to the NASL, the 1970 season where the Lancers won the NASL Title and 1971 where the Lancers were the regular season NASL champs and played in the longest 2 matches in pro soccer history.

    Our special guest was the owner of the current indoor and outdoor Rochester Lancers, "Soccer Sam" Fantauzzo, who spoke on the announcement of 21 player signings that will take place on September 13, the upcoming MASL season and the lancers honoring the past with replica jerseys for the 1970 NASL Champion Rochester Lancers, the 1981 Rochester Flash and the 1996 Rochester Rhinos.

     

    Dick Howard gave his thoughts on Lionel Messi potentially leaving Barcelona for Manchester City, the FA Community Shield won by Arsenal, the UEFA Nations League matches this week, the UEFA Women's Champions League Final, Toronto FC extending their record unbeaten streak and the Canadian Premier League matches being shown in the US on FS2.

     

    Michael Lewis talked about the return of the NWSL in September, the owner of RSL, the Utah Royals and Real Monarchs selling his teams due to controversial statements he made about his black players and staff, the MLS matches upcoming this week and Weston McKinnie being the 1st US player to join Juventus.

     

    Andrew Battisti and Joe Sirianni discussed the news that the Rochester Rhinos are partnering with Empire United Youth Soccer as a first step to bringing back the pro team who have been dormant since 2017.

    Our special guest was the Chairman of the Board of the NASL Rochester Lancers, Charlie Schiano, who shared his memories of the final season of the Lancers and the 40th anniversary of the Lancers final match on August 24, 1980, which was against the host NY Cosmos. Charlie also discussed the Lancers initial year in the NASL in 1970 and winning the championship that year.

     

    Michael Lewis also remembered the final Lancers match on August 24, 1980, along with the US Soccer draw for World Cup 2022 qualifying, the movement of young US players in the transfer window and the Cosmos' Emmnauele Sembroni being suspended for the season after a vicious foul and red card over the weekend.

     

    Dick Howard reviewed the UEFA Champions League final won by Bayern Munich over PSG and the success of Canadian international Alphonso Davies being the first man from Canada to win a Champions League medal (for Bayern), the Europa League final won by Sevilla over Inter Milan, Lionel Messi maybe leaving Barcelona for Man City, Toronto FC extending their record MLS unbeaten streak to 17 matches and Canada's draw for World Cup qualifying.

    Our special guest was US and CONCACAF Soccer Hall of Famer, the former GM of the Cosmos, Chicago Sting and Toronto Blizzard, Clive Toye, who talked about how the Rochester Lancers joined the NASL in 1970 and won the title, how Pele became a member of the NY Cosmos and the difference between soccer in the NASL vs today.

     

    Dick Howard reviewed the Europa League semifinal Monday with Inter beating Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 and the UEFA Champions league quarterfinals, provided commentary on Barcelona firing manager Quique Setien, previewed the Champions league last 3 and the first regular season matches for Toronto FC against Vancouver this week.

     

    Michael Lewis discussed the resuming of the MLS regular season on Thursday with NYCFC taking on the NY Red Bulls, Tyler Adams scoring the winning goal for RB Leipzig in the Champions league and the first ever cancellation of the US Open Cup in over 100 years.

    Our special guests were Rochester Lancers Wall of Famer and former MCC Men's Soccer Coach Nelson Cupello and his son, Tim Cupello, the head men's soccer coach at D1 UC-Riverside. The Cupellos talked about college soccer being postponed or cancelled this season due to COVID-19, what this means for the sport, the chance that soccer would become a 10 month sport in the NCAA and potential changes to the higher levels of substitution allowed in NCAA soccer.

     

    Dick Howard reviewed the Europa League quarterfinal matches on Monday and the firing of Maurizio Sarri as Juventus coach and the hiring of former great player with no coaching experience, Andrea Pirlo, as the new head man in Turin. Dick also discussed the UEFA Champions League QF's, the status of the Canadian teams in MLS and the Canadian Premiership playing all matches on PEI.

     

    Michael Lewis also talked about the restart of the MLS regular season next week as NYCFC travel to face the NY Red Bulls, plus what could happen with the Canadian teams, and also the likely signing of France World Cup Winner Blaise Matuidi by Inter Miami from Juventus.

    Dick Howard remembered the late Jack Charlton, one of the members of the 1966 England World Cup winning squad and the coach of Ireland in the 1980's and 90's, reviewed the big European matches on Monday and the Toronto FC 2-2 draw with DC United and gave his thoughts on the UEFA Champions League final draw.

     

    Michael Lewis discussed Nashville SC dropping out of the MLS is Back tournament, the initial matches for the 2 NY based teams, Monday night's MLS matches, the final group stage match in the NWSL Challenge Cup with the NC Courage facing Sky Blue and the career of the late Dutch National Team star from the 1970's Wim Suurbier, who played against the NASL Rochester Lancers for the LA Aztecs 3 times.

    This is a "Best Of" Soccer is a Kick in the Grass from April 2, 2012 and August 1, 2011. We paid tribute to the late Giorgio Chinaglia on the day after his passing featuring a number of former Lancers sharing their memories of the Cosmos number nine. We welcomed the Chairman of the Board of the Lancers, Charlie Schiano, Lancers players Nelson Cupello, Pat Ercoli and Fred Grgurev and coach Don Popovic. As a special bonus, we started the show with the final interview we did with Giorgio from 2011 when the Cosmos returned to pro soccer in the new NASL.

Joe Sirianni and Andrew Battisti broadcasted live from the Italian American Community Center, who hosted the 2014 Western New York Flash kickoff dinner. The Flash, who are now the North Carolina Courage were in the middle of a run that would earn them 13 trophies in the last decade. We interviewed not one, but 2 FIFA Women’s Players of the Year, Carli Lloyd and Rochester’s Abby Wambach, plus a number of NWSL veterans and international stars.

    This is a "Best Of" Soccer is a Kick in the Grass from October 19, 2015. Joe Sirianni and I broadcasted live from the Italian American Sport Club at the Rochester Rhinos Season Ticket Holder Party. It was a celebration of the Rhinos winning the 2015 USL regular season and playoff titles in record fashion, losing just 1 match of their 35 played that season.

     

    We interviewed all of the Rhinos players and coaches in a whirlwind 60 minute show that capped off one of the greatest campaigns in US Soccer history.

    Our special guest live from Las Vegas was the 1st inductee into the Rochester Rhinos Hall of Fame, Lenin Steenkamp, who talked about the Rhinos historic 4-3 US Open Cup win in 1996 over the top team in MLS, Tampa Bay, how the Coronavirus is impacting soccer in the US and with his children's team, Heat FC, and what it is like for the city of Las Vegas to be dark.

     

    Dick Howard, Joe Sirianni and Michael Lewis all talked about the latest impacts of COVID-19 in their locations of Toronto, Miami and NY City and their home countries as well. Dick discussed the Canadian Soccer Federation's release of "Canada Soccer Nation Inside" on their website to help Canada's soccer players and fans with special historical and fun content about Canadian soccer, teams in Germany restarting practice and which countries are actually playing league soccer currently.

     

    Michael gave his personal Top 10 list of favorite MLS moments as the league celebrated the 25th anniversary of its initial match on April 6.

Dick discussed UEFA meeting this week to decide the fate of the Champions League, Europa League and the domestic leagues, how the large Brazilian stadiums are now serving as hospitals and the only domestic league in Europe still playing.

     

    Michael also reported on former NE Revolution player Marshall Leonard now serving as a doctor in NY City treating COVID-19, the shutting down of the lower level US domestic leagues and the plans for MLS once the league resumes.

    Our special guest was Rochester Lancers coach Doug Miller, who reflected on the Lancers indoor season that concluded early due to the Coronavirus, talked about the upcoming NPSL outdoor season and the status of Glacier Ridge Sports Park during the health crisis.

     

    Dick Howard and Michael Lewis both discussed the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on world soccer and on their home cities of Toronto and New York. Dick also commented on UEFA's meeting on Tuesday where the fate of the domestic leagues, Champions league, Europa League and Euro 2020 will be decided, Liverpool being eliminated from the Champions League and Montreal losing to Olimpia 2-1 at home in the CONCACAF Champions League QF Leg 1.

     

    Michael also discussed US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro resigning abruptly on Thursday, former US International and World Champion Cindy Parlow-Cone becoming the first female president of US Soccer and what Parlow-Cone has to do to right the ship at US Soccer.

    Our special guest was Rochester Lancers captain and man of the match in the team’s 1st win of the season, 9-7 over Kansas City, Gary Boughton! Gary talked about his career that is ending after this season, his time playing for the Lancers, how important the win on Saturday was and what he will be doing in soccer moving forward.

     

    Dick Howard and Michael Lewis broke the news about Italy cancelling all sporting events until April 3, including all Serie A matches, and the US pro sports teams not allowing reporters into the locker rooms for the foreseeable future. Dick and Michael also discussed the impact the virus is having on all soccer around the world, including UEFA and CONCACAF Champions League matches this week, the US and Canadian Women’s National teams playing in important pre-Olympic tournaments and the latest results from MLS and the European leagues.

    The entire show was a tribute to former NASL Rochester Lancers star Ibraim Silva, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 65 in his native Portugal. Silva scored the most memorable goal in Lancers history in the 1977 NASL playoffs in Toronto when the Lancers played down 2 men for 70 minutes and won 1-0 after being out shot 34-1. Joining us to remember Ibraim was the Chairman of the Board of the NASL Lancers, Charlie Schiano, and his coach with the Lancers, Don Popovic. Dick Howard, Michael Lewis, Joe Sirianni and Andrew Battisti all recalled Ibraim Silva the player and the man during the show. RIP Ibraim

    The head coach of the Lancers and former indoor MVP, Doug Miller, who talked about being inducted into the Wall of Fame with his wife Kari, the choreographer of the Lancer Dancers, the Lancers matches over the weekend, losses to Milwaukee 15-4 and Kansas City 12-4 and the improvement the team is showing over these last few matches.
