  • December 29, 2022 - our year end show

    On our special 90 minute year end show, we remembered the king of soccer, Pele, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 82. Joining Andrew, Dick Howard and Front Row Soccer's Michael Lewis, the author of "Alive and Kicking, the Incredible but True Story of the Rochester Lancers" (go to rochesterlancersbook.com), to share their memories of Pele were the Chairman of the Board of the original Lancers, Charlie Schiano, and Lancers Wall of Famer Nelson Cupello from Brazil. Charlie and Nelson also gave tribute to original Lancer and longtime local soccer coach Don Lalka, who died on Christmas Day.
     
    We also had the managing director & Chief Commercial Officer for Flower City Union, Mark Washo, on to talk about the first season for Union and his late friend, US Soccer Hall of Famer and MLS founding father, Kevin Payne. Finally, we previewed the return of the indoor Rochester Lancers in MASL2 head coach Jake Schindler.

    We also focused on the FIFA World Cup with host Joe Sirianni and Andrew Battisti and our correspondents Michael Lewis and Dick Howard discussing the exciting Quarterfinal matches and giving our thoughts and predictions on the semi-finals and who will raise the trophy on Sunday. Michael also gave the latest news on the controversial situation between US Soccer star Gio Reyna and US National team coach Gregg Berhalter.

    Our special guest was the only man to win 2 NASL MVP awards, Rochester Lancers' Wall of Famer and proud Brazilian, Carlos Metidieri, who spoke on his receiving a ring for the 1970 NASL champion Lancers for his birthday over the weekend, Brazil's 4-1 win over South Korea in the World Cup, the US being eliminated and what it was like playing for the US National Team in the early 1970's.

Michael also previewed World Cup Group C featuring Argentina, Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia and Group F with Spain, Germany, Japan and Costa Rica.
     
    Dick Howard previewed World Cup group A with host Qatar, Holland, Ecuador and Senegal and group G with favorites Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon and reviewed the weekend's big matches across Europe.

    Dick Howard reviewed the Canadian Premiership final where Forge FC beat host Atletico Ottawa 1-0, previewed the UEFA Champions League final group stage matches and discussed the request by Ukraine to FIFA to remove Iran from the upcoming World Cup.

    The Kick in the Grass team recalled their favorite moments in the career of the immortal Pele, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on October 23.
     
    Dick Howard previewed the Canadian Premiership final between Atletico Ottawa and Forge FC, and reviewed the draw for the Canadian women in the 2023 World Cup and the big Premiership and Serie A matches from the past week.

    Joe and Andrew discussed the return of the indoor Rochester Lancers to the Major Arena Soccer League 2nd division for the upcoming 2022-23 season, when the matches will be played and some potential big news coming out of the league meetings this week. We hope to have a special guest from the Lancers next week.

    • Lancers Wall of Famer Nelson Cupello, who spoke on being honored recently by MCC, who dedicated a plaque at their soccer stadium to both him and founding Men's Soccer coach Joe Mancarella for over 60 years of service to the program, and SUNY Fredonia, who celebrated Cupello's 1985 and 1986 NCAA D3 Final 4 teams.
    • Flower City Union head coach Colton Bly, who reviewed the loss earlier in the day to Michigan in the final match of 2022 and discussed the overall season and the plans for next season.

    Dick Howard talked about the Indonesia tragedy and the repercussions of the situation, plus Dick reviewed Canada's 2-0 loss to Uruguay in their final World Cup tune-up, the Canadian teams in MLS and the Canadian Premiership fighting for playoff positioning, the latest results in the EPL and this week's big Champions League and domestic league fixtures.
     
    Front Row Soccer's Michael Lewis, the author of "Alive and Kicking, the Incredible but True Story of the Rochester Lancers" (go to rochesterlancersbook.com) spoke in depth about the report on the NWSL from US Soccer and what could happen as a result, as well as the US Men tying Saudi Arabia 0-0 in their last warmup match before Qatar 2022 and Decision Day in MLS on Sunday where the final playoff spots and positions will be decided for all teams, including the NY Red Bulls and defending champions NYCFC.

    Tonight's show was dedicated to the memory of original Rochester Lancer and a member of the Lancers Wall of Fame, Tito Laurini. Our first special guest was the Chairman of the Board of the original Lancers, Charlie Schiano, who, along with host Joe Sirianni, gave his memories of Tito as a player, coach, family man and a friend.
     
    Both his Lancers' teammate Dick Howard and Lancers biographer and Front Row Soccer's Michael Lewis, the author of the book "Alive and Kicking, the Incredible but True Story of the Rochester Lancers" (go to rochesterlancersbook.com), remembered Tito as well. Michael and Dick also reviewed the pre-World Cup friendlies taking place last week and this week.
     
    Our second special guest was Flower City Union assistant coach Jordan Sullivan, who reviewed the team's tough 1-0 defeat at Chattanooga, previewed the final match of 2022 on Columbus Day against Michigan and how the team is preparing for the contest and also talked about his soccer background growing up in London.

    In Part Two, Charlie discussed the 1970 season where the Lancers won the NASL Title, 1971 where the Lancers were the regular season NASL champs and played in the longest 2 matches in pro soccer history and the Lancers competing in the 1972 CONCACAF Champions Cup in Guatemala.

    We concluded our 3 week celebration of 45th anniversary of the 1977 Rochester Lancers semi-final run in the NASL playoffs with our special guest, hall of fame player and coach Nelson Cupello, who spoke on the most watched matches in Lancers history, the semi-finals against the Cosmos, and told about how he became a member of the Lancers out of college.
     
    We also were joined by former NPSL and MASL Lancer, the newest member of Flower City Union, Michael Cunningham, who spoke on how he came to play for Union, the tough 2-0 loss to Syracuse at home on Saturday, the upcoming West Coast road trip against San Diego and LA and his soccer training YouTube channel with over 1 million followers, - click here to visit the site.
     
    Dick Howard reviewed Monday's Serie A matches and the big EPL contest between Manchester United and Liverpool, he weekend's key contests across Europe, Toronto FC's 2-1 loss in Miami and the CONCACAF Champions League tie between Pacific FC and Herediano of Costa Rica.

    Dick Howard reviewed Toronto FC's 3-1 win over Portland, the controversial 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Spurs, Manchester United being at the bottom of the EPL table, Liverpool drawing Crystal Palace 1-1, the start of Serie A and the latest from the Canadian Premiership.

    We began our 3 week celebration of 45th anniversary of the 1977 Rochester Lancers semi-final run in the NASL playoffs with our special guest, Lancers defender, NASL veteran and former US International Don Droege, who spoke about the mood of the team before the 1st playoff match in St. Louis, the challenges the Lancers had in winning on the road, the conditions and the result of the contest, a shootout win after a 0-0 draw and what the win meant to the team in preparation for the quarterfinal series against Toronto, which we will review next week.
     
    Dick Howard reviewed Toronto FC's big 4-3 win in Nashville and the 1st weekend of matches in the Premiership, plus Dick and Joe previewed the upcoming season in Serie A and La Liga.

    Dick's second segment was a preview of the new English Premier League and Bundesliga seasons, including what teams will challenge for the title and the major player moves that have taken place so far.
     
    Front Row Soccer's Michael Lewis, the author of "Alive and Kicking, the Incredible but True Story of the Rochester Lancers" (go to rochesterlancersbook.com), spoke on the US Open Cup semi-finals and the demise of the NY Red Bulls, NYCFC's offense sputtering against Montreal and the mayor of New York City allegedly being in favor of a new stadium for NYCFC near Citi Field.

Dick also talked about the Toronto FC winning 4-0 on Saturday thanks to their new Italian international signings, the big crowds for the international friendlies in the US this past weekend, England Community Shield between Man City and Liverpool this Saturday the Women's Euro tournament semi-finals and the Canadian Championship final between Vancouver and Toronto.
     
    Michael talked about NYCFC and MLS leading scorer Taty Castellanos being loaned to FC Girona in Spain, who will pick up the scoring slack and the NY Red Bulls big week starting with a 4-3 away win at Austin, the US Open Cup semi-final at Orlando Wednesday and their hosting Barcelona in a friendly on Saturday.
     
    Host Joe Sirianni returned to the show and reviewed Flower City Union winning the NISA Independent Cup Northeast 2-0 in extra time over NJ Alliance and RNY FC dropping a tough 2-0 result at home to bottom of the table FC Cincinnati 2.

    Our special guests were RNY FC assistant coach Gui Ramos, who spoke on the team's big 1-0 away win at NYCFC II, how the team has turned around a slow to start to have 1 loss in their last 10 matches and the big home match against FC Cincinnati 2 on Friday, and new Flower City Union back Noah Cavanaugh, who spoke on coming to play in Rochester in the last week, the loss on Saturday to Chattanooga, the NISA Cup match on Sunday at home and his using social media to further his and his team's brands (www.noahcavanaugh.com).
     
    Dick Howard and Front Row Soccer's Michael Lewis, the author of "Alive and Kicking, the Incredible but True Story of the Rochester Lancers" (go to rochesterlancersbook.com), previewed the CONCACAF Women's Tournament final between the US and Canada for a spot in the Olympics.     The show also paid tribute to the late Agnes (Aggie) Schiano, the wife of NASL Rochester lancers Chairman of the board, Charlie Schiano, who passed away last week at the age of 86. All of us on the show send our deepest condolences to Charlie and his family.

    Our special guest was the player of the match in the Rochester Lady Lancers 7-0 win over Erie Sunday, Caroline Kopp (2 goals & 2 assists), who spoke on the Lancers historic season (7-1-2) winning a share of the UWS Penn-NY division title, how the team prepared for and executed the game plan to score enough goals to make the playoffs, her first time playing forward, how the team felt after the match and what we can expect next season from the Lancers.

    The host of Soccer is a Kick in the Grass and former NASL Rochester Lancers trainer, Joe "Red Card" Sirianni, told the true story of how he became the first trainer in US Pro soccer history to be red carded in a match. The fixture was the Lancers against the host Chicago Sting back in 1977, 45 years before Philadelphia Union's Paul Rushing suffered the same fate in the June 26 match against NYCFC.
